Competition Band Tryouts (Winds)
There will be 2 chances to make Competition Band.
The first set of tryouts will take place the week of the 10th-14th during class.
The second chance will take place May 11th and 12th during class.
We will handle all parts of the audition during class.
Requirements
Scales Chromatic scale (1 octave starting on any note)
- 5 Major Scales (Any 5 scales)
- Students that march secondary instruments will audition on their primary instrument
- French horns will play on French horn not mellophone.
Marching Portion
- Box 8 exercise performed at 90 bpm, 120 bpm, and 140 bpm
Mile Requirement
- 12:30 or faster
Students that switch to Tuba for marching season will be given a higher chance to make competition band. This is in order to address our severe Tuba shortage for the upcoming year.
Alternates
We will be utilizing alternates for the upcoming season. They will a full part of the show and will be required to be at all rehearsals. They will assist with props more heavily during the show. There may be opportunities for the alternates to play during the show as well as perform visually.
Students may be offered alternate status based on how their audition goes. This will be handled at the directors’ discretion on a case by case basis.
Drum Major Auditions
There will be drum major clinics as well as an audition. The clinics will be after school April 10th and 13th. The auditions will be after school the 14th. During these clinics we will be teaching everyone the basics of conducting as well as all of the required material for the audition.
Students will evaluated during the clinic as well. We need to see who can pick up on things quickly and who is the most teachable.
The students that make Drum Major will be STRONGLY encouraged to attend a summer drum major camp. The camp is called George Parks Drum Major Academy. They have several camps in several locations.
WE ARE LOOKING TO HAVE 4 DRUM MAJORS NEXT YEAR!

- 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 2/4 double stop
Cut offs
- Beats 1, 2, 3, and 4
Vocal Commands
- Call the band to attention
- Band dismissal
Prepared Piece
- Conduct with a recording.
- The music will be announced the day of the first clinic. The students will also be given a score.
Interview with the Directors
- Some questions will be given to the students in advance so they can prepare answers.
- There will also be questions that are not given out in advance.
Section Leader Interviews
Section Leader interviews will be after school the 20th and the 21st. Students will be able to sign up for their interview time.

We want to encourage upcoming juniors to go out for section leader. We are interested in having a few more section leaders for the upcoming year.
